Why Bookity Split?

When I first envisioned this website and the resources I wanted to include on it, I kept coming back to the idea that if we want our children to grow into readers, we must encourage them to read in a positive way.  For me, and many others out there who consider themselves “readers,” I can’t wait to pick my next book, I look forward to my reading time, and I consider it a treat to get to sit down and read a book!  It is a positive, happy experience for us.  Yet, some children find reading to be a chore.  It is just something to check off of their list, like a homework assignment they have to do.

This idea reminds me of a quote from Mem Fox, a children’s book author from Australia.  She said in her book, Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever,

“When I say to a parent, ‘read to a child,’ I don’t want it to sound like medicine. I want it to sound like chocolate.”

Love of Reading

We want the idea of reading a book to be so desirable to our children that they could compare it to sitting down to eat the best ice cream sundae imaginable!  Reading should be a treat!  These images fresh in my mind, my family and I came up with the idea of a perfect name for my new adventure:  Bookity Split…Feeding a Love of Reading.
